The LinkedIn Commenting Strategy That Grows Your Following

A complete LinkedIn commenting strategy: who to comment on, what to say, how often, and how commenting alone can grow you 1,000+ followers a month.

comments.

The short version

  • You can grow a LinkedIn audience with comments alone (no original posts required) because comments expose you to other people's audiences.
  • A working system is 10-20 quality comments a day across a fixed list of 15-25 target creators and 3-5 niche keywords.
  • The comment formula that converts readers into profile visits is to react to a specific point, add your experience, and extend the idea.
  • Profile optimization multiplies commenting ROI; your headline is read by everyone who hovers over your comment.

Everyone tells you to "post consistently" on LinkedIn. Almost nobody tells you the quieter truth: the fastest way to grow from zero is to comment on other people's posts, because your posts reach your (small) audience, while your comments reach everyone else's.

This is the complete commenting system we've refined with Commenti users, many of whom grew their first real audience without publishing a single original post.

Why commenting beats posting when you're small

When you have 500 followers, a post reaches maybe 150 feeds in its test wave. A comment on a 50k-follower creator's post, sitting in the top five, can be seen by thousands of people in your exact niche: people who chose to follow content like yours.

Three things happen every time your comment lands:

  1. Readers hover over your name → they read your headline.
  2. A percentage visit your profile → your featured section does the selling.
  3. Some follow or connect → your next comment reaches them directly.

That funnel (comment → hover → visit → follow) is the entire strategy. Everything below just optimizes each step.

Step 1: Build your target list

Random commenting produces random results. Instead, build a fixed list:

  • 15-25 creators in your niche with 10k-100k followers (engaged audiences, comment sections you can still win).
  • 3-5 keywords or hashtags your buyers or peers actually search and post about.
  • 5-10 rising peers at your level; their audiences overlap yours, and early relationships compound.

Review the list monthly. Drop creators whose comment sections turned into ghost towns; add whoever keeps showing up in your feed with real conversations.

Step 2: The comment formula

The comments that generate profile visits follow a repeatable shape, react, add, extend (see these LinkedIn comment examples for more variations):

"The point about async standups hit home. We killed our daily call six months ago and wrote updates in a channel instead; meeting load dropped 40% and nobody misses it. The unlock was making updates skimmable: three bullets, no prose. Curious if you cap yours?"

Break it down:

  • React to one specific point (proves you read it; 80% of commenters don't).
  • Add your experience, a number, or a contrarian nuance (this is the part people screenshot).
  • Extend with a question or a next step (invites the author to reply, which doubles your comment's visibility).

Fifteen words minimum. No "Great post!", no emoji-only, no "Thanks for sharing": those actively train readers to ignore your name.

What about disagreeing?

Disagreement is engagement gold if you disagree with the idea, not the person, and bring evidence. "Respectfully, our data shows the opposite…" comments routinely out-perform agreement because they start real threads.

Step 3: Timing and cadence

  • 10-20 comments a day, spread across the day rather than one burst.
  • Comment within the first 30-60 minutes of a target creator's post going live (usually mornings; see our data on the best time to post on LinkedIn), and turn on the notification bell for your top 10.
  • Reply to replies. When an author responds to your comment, answer within a few hours. A thread with your name in it three times is three times the exposure.

Consistency matters more than intensity here. Fifteen comments a day for 30 days beats 100 comments one motivated weekend, both for the algorithm and for the humans starting to recognize your name.

Step 4: Convert the attention

Your comment got someone to your profile. Now what?

  • Headline: outcome-first, not title-first. "Helping B2B founders book 20+ calls/mo with outbound" beats "Founder & CEO".
  • Banner: one sentence of positioning, readable on mobile.
  • Featured section: pin your best post, a lead magnet, or your booking link.
  • Activity tab: this is the part nobody mentions. Your recent comments are your content when you don't post. Make sure the last ten are ones you'd be happy to have read back to you.

The math of 1,000 followers a month

Rough but realistic funnel from our user data:

Stage Rate Monthly result
Comments left 15/day ~450
Readers per comment 200-600 ~150k impressions
Hover → profile visit 2-4% 3,000-6,000 visits
Visit → follow 15-25% 450-1,500 follows

The wide ranges are honest: niche, comment quality and profile strength move every number. But the shape holds: commenting is a predictable, linear machine, which is more than can be said for hoping a post goes viral.

Scaling it without losing your voice

The system above takes 45-75 focused minutes a day. That's the catch, and it's where most people quietly quit around week three.

This is the exact problem Commenti solves: you set your target creators and keywords, approve the tone once, and it writes and posts comments in your voice, with daily limits, skip-filters and human pacing that keep your account safe (we've written a full breakdown of whether LinkedIn automation is safe). The strategy stays yours; the streak becomes automatic. Commenti's tiers are built around 20-60 new followers a day; results vary.

Whether you run it manually or on autopilot, the principle is the same: on LinkedIn, your comment section presence is a content channel, arguably your best one until you cross a few thousand followers. Treat it like one.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really grow on LinkedIn without posting?

Yes. Comments appear in the feeds of the post author's audience, so every comment is distribution borrowed from someone else's following. Many people build their first 5,000 followers primarily through commenting, then start posting to an audience that already exists.

How many comments a day should I leave on LinkedIn?

10-20 substantive comments a day is the sweet spot. Below that, you're invisible; far above it, quality collapses and LinkedIn may rate-limit low-quality activity. Spacing them through the day looks more natural than a burst.

Do comments help if my profile is not optimized?

Commenting drives hovers and profile visits, so a weak headline wastes them. Fix your headline and banner first; it takes an hour and roughly doubles the conversion from comment reader to follower.
